There’s a gifting occasion for couples, families, friends, mothers and fathers – and the latest to be growing steadily in popularity is Singles’ Day, and about time, we say.
Birthed from an unofficial holiday celebrating the uncoupled, the massive shopping sales event that takes the Chinese retail scene by storm every year – according to Reuters, last year Alibaba made $19 billion in sales within the first hour – is now in its 12th year. Increasingly, Australian retailers are getting in on the action so you can expect some exciting discounts and sales heading your way in November.
Singles’ Day, or China Singles’ Day as it’s also known, is always held on November 11 – chosen for the way 11/11 resembles four ‘single sticks’, a Chinese term used to describe bachelors. This year, Singles’ Day starts directly after the Aussie sales event, Click Frenzy: The Main Event, meaning many local retailers have chosen to offer shoppers deals that cover the two events.
Here, listed below, are the many retailers – across all categories, including fashion, home, beauty and technology – that are offering sales during Singles’ Day.

WHAT IS SINGLES’ DAY?
The story goes that Singles’ Day was first started by Nanjing University students in the early ‘90s, who exchanged gifts with one another as an anti-Valentines Day gesture. In the years since then, Singles’ Day has been adopted by retailers and has grown to be the single largest shopping sale day worldwide, with Chinese e-commerce site Alibaba reportedly making $41.4 billion in sales two years ago.
Such is the scale of this 24-hour event, that last year’s live-streamed gala included a performance by globally-renowned singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift; with previous years’ headliners including Mariah Carey, and homegrown, Oscar-winning actress, Nicole Kidman.
WHAT ARE SOME SHOPPING TIPS TO GET THE MOST FROM SINGLES’ DAY?
Considering the attention from both international and local markets – and the fact that Singles Day is a one-day event – it’s likely you’re going to need to act quickly to snatch up savings before items sell out.
A couple of tips to remember before and during the day include:
– Create any and every user account before the day. Many, if not all, e-commerce sites will require you to have a user account before checkout, or even before making a wishlist. Don’t let other shoppers checkout with that last dress in your size because you were digging around for your credit card to upload details.
– Make a wishlist beforehand, and for more than one retailer. If there’s a particular item you’ve had your eyes on for a while, we recommend adding it to competing retailers’ wishlists before the day. Come November 11, rather than sift through information about various deals at different sites, you can check back to your wishlists to see applied discounts, and know for certain you’re getting the best deal possible.
WHAT OTHER SALE OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE TO LOOK OUT FOR?
Singles’ Day is one of several huge shopping events that are to take place from now until the end of the year. Come the end of November, both local and international retailers will be massively discounting their wares for Black Friday weekend, which ends in Cyber Monday – a day-long event that Americans spent $8 billion on two years ago, according to Salesforce.
Only a month later, shoppers can get their hands on more deals, courtesy of Boxing Day, arguably still the most-renowned sales event in Australia. Check back at news.com.au’s Best Of section come December, for everything you need to know about the post-holiday shopping event.
