If you’re after something bigger, this new 2021 flatscreen is also available in 55 inch (now reduced to only £349) and 65-inch screen (reduced to £469), so there is something to suit everyone’s viewing preferences.
A slim 4K HDR set, the 50-inch RP620K has fashionably wide feet and an ultra slim bezel; this all-picture design (it measures 119mm across) means you’ll probably be able to slot it into a space previously occupied by an older, smaller screen size TV.
Tech specs are high. There’s support for Dolby Vision HDR, alongside standard HDR10 and HLG (as used by the BBC). It also boasts Dynamic Colour Enhancement and advanced UHD upscaling for standard def and HD sources.
Not that you need to worry about such technicalities, but an on-board Smart HDR mode automatically adjusts settings to make the most of what you watch – of which there’s plenty.
What is Roku?
The inclusion of the Roku streaming platform really makes this set stand out from its rivals. Apparently there are more than 53 million Roku devices in use worldwide, that’s quite a user base.
Not only does Roku offer pretty much all the major (and countless minor) streaming services you’ll want, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, AppleTV+, NOW and BT Sport, it also comes with the Roku Channel, a free to watch service with a huge variety of shows.
New and exclusive on the Roku channel this summer are Die Hart (not a typo, it stars Kevin Hart), the gritty drama #FreeRayshawn starring Laurence Fishburne, comedy Reno 911! and Punk’d.
Why we love it
The set also has Freeview Play, which means all your favourite catch up services are on tap, including BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4 and UKTV Play, plus countless hours of free to binge box sets.
The 50 inch TV also works with Amazon Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant devices, and has Apple AirPlay 2 compatibility for easy streaming from iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Voice control is also available via the accompanying Roku TV app. With it you can use your smartphone to take control of the set, and search for content using voice commands.
Connections include four HDMI ports (one of which supports eARC to hook up a soundbar), and a digital optical output. The 43-inch screen size (and smaller) have two HDMIs. Normally I’d moan that just two HDMIs is a bit mean, but given just how much is built-into this TV, it’s probably not going to be an issue.
The Home Screen is also customisable, so you can arrange it for easy access to connected devices and the services you want to watch.
TV maker TCL has been looking to make a splash in the UK for some time. With a little help from Roku, this model could do just that.
